What is an IBCLC?
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are highly experienced, trained and qualified to help families in their feeding journey. They are knowledgeable in all areas of lactation and can help with both basic and complex breastfeeding challenges. IBCLCs are experts and hold the internationally recognised breastfeeding credential.
As an IBCLC we are regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and work within a code of professional conduct. We are required to re certify every 5 years with 75 hours of continuing education
What are the typical issues that you come across?
The most common issues tend to be;
Difficulty with positioning and attachment
Pain during feeds
Low milk supply
Poor weight gain or reduced output
Concerns about transitioning from alternative feeding methods to exclusive breastfeeding
Is in person better than virtual support?
Many parents are unsure about the efficiency of virtual support, an virtual assessment can be carried out just as effectively as an in person consultation. Virtual support can be great if you want general reassurance about your feeding. I can observe and carry out an assessment of your feeding and then provide practical tips and a plan if necessary.
If you're still unsure, I would consider whether there are particular clinical concerns or input from other health care professionals, particularly if this is your first time seeing a lactation consultant. If this is the case, you may want to consider a face to face appointment initially, then we can discuss whether virtual support may be an option for you.
How many sessions would I need to have?
There is no particular amount of sessions suggestions, it very much depends on the feeding concerns and the extent of the support needed. For some, a one off session is all that is needed, for others the journey is longer. Throughout the session I work with you to build a plan and at the end of the session I always discuss my recommendations to implement this and how I can best support you.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Unfortunately as lactation consultants we are not covered by private health care insurance.
The cost of an IBCLC reflect;
1. Highly specialised training & credentials. After completing hundreds of clinical hours and passing a rigourous international exam, ongoing education and recertification are required to keep skills up to date.
2. Time spent with families. A consultation isn’t just the hour you see us. It includes preparation, documentation, follow-up support, writing reports to your GP/health visitor and potential follow ups.
3. Personalised, one-to-one care. Every feeding journey is unique.
4. Business costs. Running a private practice means covering insurance, professional memberships, equipment, travel and ongoing training.
5. An investment with long-term value. Specialised support can help to prevent or resolve feeding issues, existing and potential costs to support your feeding journey as well as improve overall health outcomes and lower healthcare interventions.
We tailor our care to your baby, your body, and your goals. So while the upfront fee might feel high, many families find the value of compassionate, skilled, and timely support priceless.
Remember support is always available, your midwife and health visitor should be able to signpost you to local feeding support sessions. The National Breastfeeding Helpline is available 24/7 on 03001000212 or via social media.
